I just realized that these are two different words. I wonder, would anyone ever use forwent, eg. I forwent dessert? Sounds pretty awful.

I have to admit that I have used the phrase - and you're quite right; it does sound pretty bad! Definitely only for jocular use, I think!

I'd venture to say that I've never heard it in anything but the infinitive.
