I think the use of 'inconnus" in that example is not good writing. The French word
does not convey any special shade of meaning that its English equivalent would
not.

Generally, "inconnu" in French is an opposite of the word "connu", which means: known. I'm not sure, but I think it is in the ballpark ( I've learnt this expression here )
