I looked up the word 'ennui' in my dictionary and found that it has a peculiar origin from French via the Latin phrase mihi in odio est "it is hateful to me". It's not an acronym. You can't really call it transliteration, can you? What's the story?

Thanks.

S. Beetle.

AHD has a word history for ennui that is fairly helpful. As an added bonus we discover that annoy is a cousin of ennui.

By "AHD", Faldo means the American Heritage Dictionary. Abbreviations fall lightly from the typing fingers of regulars on this board and can sometimes be opaque to newcomers. Welcome, beetle.

When I grow up, I want to be a member of the Obvious Family, just like Ron.

All members of the Obvious Family are inlaws, as opposed to outlaws.
