tsuwm's useless word compotation today caught my eye and probably ear, too, since I've been hearing reports of the need for 'potable' water in southern Iraq. tsuwm informed us that compotation is the act of drinking together. I'll assume that the 'pot' is a root having to do with drinking that connects compotation and potable.
But my question is: What are some other words that have to do with drinking that derive from the 'pot' root [Latin: potare]?

"Potable" and all related words hark back to one of the most debowdlerised Latin words used by that thirsty race. Here are some related Latin words from an online dictionary and their English definitions. You can tell that the meaning and content of the basic word poto potare potavi potatum underwent expansion over time ...  potatio -onis f. [a drinking bout]. potio (1) -onis f. [drinking; a drink , a draught]; esp. [a love-draught, philtre]. poto potare potavi potatum and potum [to drink]; esp. [to drink heavily]; of things , [to absorb]. Hence partic. potus -a -um: pass. [drunk, drained]; act. [having drunk, drunken]. potor -oris m. [a drinker]; esp. And I have seen Mesopotamia" called the lande between the rivers by competent scholars.
And the bulbous beasts called "river horses" by ditto.

Speakng of Mesopotamia brings to mind "pottage," as in "selling one's birthright for a mess of pottage." Do the "pot" in "pottage" and for that matter in "pot" (as in "not calling the kettle black") come from the same potare root?

Sometimes, I simply do not comprehend any of the goings-on (shaking head in utter bewilderment e) 'Poi' especially is sailing over my head.
Faldage's link suggested that the greek 'potamos' is the root for both Mesopotamia and the adorable hippo. Does that apply also to the Potomac?

I looked up compote, as in stewed fruit, sometimes delicious and otherwise disgusting--but that 'pot' in compote was unrelated. Turned out to be more related to compost, and, I'll tell you one thing, some fruit compotes in my experience have tasted more like compost than fruit.

Dear Faldage: what have you been drinking?
Neither of your citations contain anytghing contradicting
etymology of "Mesopotamia" for which I can find a half dozen
sites supporting "Land between the rivers".
And as always, I deplore attitude of oldtimers that newcomers should read 100,000 posts lest they duplicate one.
