My old car is to be used for a wedding in a couple of weeks. Needs to fitted out with white ribbons and, as is the fashion in Oz, a kewpie doll as a bonnet emblem.
Got to wondering where the word came from.....
(Lot of traditions behind weddings when you think about it. I remember a friend of a friend's wedding in Austria (NOT Australia!!). They filled balloons with LPG and put a match to them as the bridal party approached - so a series of ever closer and rather healthy explosions preceded her passage to the church. It was in a rural part of Austria and was very much the done thing there.)

Here you go, sweet stales: the Kewpie doll, the most famous doll of its era, the ultimate emblem of cuteness, whose name was a diminutive for the classic Cupid it resembled. http://www.s-t.com/daily/01-99/01-03-99/e04li170.htm

Where I come from we used to fill the car's air conditioning vents with confetti and wire the brake to the horn just before shoving a potato into the end of the exhaust pipe. Then we'd put shaving cream all over the car and write charming messages in it, like "she'll be all right tonight, mate!"
Ah, those were the days. Real class!

When my uncles Harold got martried almost eighty years ago, his brother moistened the undersides of porcelain of spark plugs with saliva, then make lines with indelible pencil which conducted current, so plugs could not spark, motor could not fire. Uncle Harold was not knowledgeable about automobiles, and was baffled until bystander told him what had been done.

Dear AS: I'm glad not all my typos are merely pathetic. My aunt Stella (Estelle)_was something special - a lady lawyer who lived to be 103.

Well, if you say so. I bought Peggy a T-shirt a few years ago that says, "I'm not a lady, I'm a lawyer." And every time her older sister, also a lawyer, sees it, there's this discussion about which one has the right to wear it. Peggy's now in the ABA's simplified 374-step program for recovering attorneys.
