My old car is to be used for a wedding in a couple of weeks. Needs to fitted out with white ribbons and, as is the fashion in Oz, a kewpie doll as a bonnet emblem.
Got to wondering where the word came from.....
(Lot of traditions behind weddings when you think about it. I remember a friend of a friend's wedding in Austria (NOT Australia!!). They filled balloons with LPG and put a match to them as the bridal party approached - so a series of ever closer and rather healthy explosions preceded her passage to the church. It was in a rural part of Austria and was very much the done thing there.)
