or Sr. or III? I've seen it called a suffix but I seem to recall a specific word for it.

Thanks,
Mac

hi, thanks.

and, well, they are abbrvs. but I could swear I'd seen a word to describe those kinds of add-on. Like honorific...

Hi Mac,

I have seen them called surname suffixes by genealogists, but no special term such as you are looking for.

Hello Mac!

The only word that immediately comes to mind is, title.
I have a feeling that there is a more flowery term than this, but I cannot recollect it offhand. An appellation, maybe?

Actually®, I call them 'Grandfather, Dad and Smiley'.

I fully understand your question now... I truly thought you were asking about 'Senior' or 'Illinois'... not that 2/4ths of me wuzn't kidding before, but.

Stylebooks refer to them as "titles of lineage." Don't know if that's the technical term, but.

Musick, you've got music on your brain! Ruh roh, I f'rgot: you're supposed to!

Mac, welcome to the loony house. I tried looking up an answer for you; no luck, but I found this description: the naming company is Namebase Naming Company Naming Companies Names
Provides brand naming, positioning, brand strategy and trademark services services.

(If anybody thinks this is an advertisement, tell me and I'll delete it.)

Hmm--just found a site that calls them suffixes. I'm not sure that there's not another option.

Thanks all. I think I was wrong about there being a word. Hey... it's a neologistic opportunity, right?

Just for the rippin' hell of it, I looked this up in Anglo American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed. (I have to consult that indispensible volume frequently, because I am a cataloger in A Major Research Library) and it referred to those things as being in the category of "certain other terms following names". Somehow, I don't think that expression is going to gain much currency.

But isn't it terrifying to know there is an entire big fat book delineating the rules for cataloging books? And that there is an even fatter one called LCRI (Library of Congress Rule Interpretations) that explains them in a way that makes them even more confusing?

Yes, we've come a long way since the messy old days of consulting a haruspex. No more offal truth for librarians.

Reminds me of one of my favorite bumper stickers. "If you're not confused, you just
don't understand the situation."
