a news report mentioned a town i was unfamiliar with-- It spoke of the town of Newcastle-- Later i realized they meant New Cassel--(a town i did know from street signs)

i realized that Castle and Cassel i would say as cas'l (one sylable)as Cas sel(2 sylables). I don't know which is right for the town name (i don't trust news reporters to get it right)-- but how would you say New Cassel?

Come, come now, ledasdottir. You're not expecting strangers to pronounce New York place names right the first time through. I need merely mention:

Taughannock

Skaneateles

Delhi

Not to mention Rensselaer or Poughkeepsie or Chautauqua.

But in fairness, New York isn't unique in this regard. Massachusetts has Worcester (I should know!), and Leicester, and any number of inscrutable names of Indian origin...

Not to mention quaintly named ones like Painted Post or Water Mill

but Cassel is not really a "strange name"...

And Newcastle (the Australian one) is pronounced by the East Coasters as New-cas'l whereas the rest of the country pronounces it New-cahs'l.

There's a town just "up the road a piece" here in New Hampshire called New Castle.
In pre-Revolutionary times, New Hampshire folks in Portsmouth raised a Liberty Pole, then stole the British stores of ordnance and rowed across it all to the (then) island of New Castle and hid part of the ammunition and rifles in New Castle church basement. Some ordnance was taken overland and hidden in Exeter church basements. Brits didn't see them again until they faced them in battle in the hands of the Colonials!
