I'm glad to have learned etymology of "erudite". However, the word "rude" need not include
tendency to be insulting to others. "By the rude bridge that arched the flood". And it is the
exception rather than the rule that especially well educated people are humble. I have known
only one such person - I bumped into him in my haste to enter an elevator. He said "Pardon me"
and not in a sarcastic manner, before I could, I was so ashamed of my rudeness to
William B. Castle, professor of medicine at Harvard.
