I know febrile is from febris (fever). Is there a connection between februare and febris? From the belief perhaps, that a fever was somehow purifying the system because the body broke into a sweat?
Here's a related snippet The Latin root 'fugere', means to flee or escape. Some derivatives of this are subterfuge, fugitive and refugee. There is an herb called, 'feverfew', that has been studied for its alleged beneficial properties as a prophylactic agent for migraine. This herb was originally called, 'febrifuge', as it caused a 'fever to flee'.

If there is AHD4 doesn't note it. It says februa relates to an expiatory offering and is possibly from Sabine. Sabine was an Italic language but.
