This is/was a Strive-To vocab. word of the day I hadn't heard of before:

Amerce:

": to punish by a fine whose amount is fixed by the court; broadly : punish"

Set a fine, levy a fine? But amerce a fine? I've never heard this one used.

Anybody out there who's come across this one?

I ran across it just today. In the Merriam-Webster Word of the Day.

Maybe. The -merce in commerce is from the Latin for merchandise the -merce in amerce is from the Latin for wages

Hey, that's cool! (And now we know what poor people mean when they cry Lord, amerce...)

Lord, amerce

Closer than you might think. The -merce came through the French merci back when it still meant mercy

I'm shedding tears as big as horsebuns. Much as it would ill-become me to use tsuwm's
execrable acronym, "amerce" was posted in Beheading Words last November 17.
Booh-hoo-hoo-hoo!

Oh, let me wipe your tears, wwh, with a bit of tissue large as a horsebun. Sorry for the oversight and lack of credit given to you for introducing a word here...but I am horribly remiss in going through the archives.

Consider me completely apologetic and thoroughly beheaded,
WW

Dear WW: poor pathetic poster that I am, I thank you for your solicitude. I was just
hoping to entice more members to patonized Beheading Words.
