Hi, Vika!

Could you please try to spell out exactly how Russians would pronounce Tchaikovsky's name?

This is the way I teach my children at school to pronounce his most splendid name:

1. CH (as in 'church' + eye as in the eyeball) = Cheye
2. kov = cough (as in havinga bad cold and coughing) = Cheye-COUGH
3. sky as in ski (going down the slopes) = Cheye-COUGH-ski

Am I in the ballpark as far as Russian goes? If not, will you help me tweak my pronunciation?

Thanks in advance,
WW

Standing in for vika until she comes with the definitive word; it is spelled CH-A-i-K-O-V-S-K-I-i, where the lower case i represents a shortened version if the letter we transliterate as I. As to pronunciation, I will only say that I have heard it pronounced Chee kawv skee by native Russians in conjunction with the Tschaikovsky Competition. Your pronunciation sounds to me like the standard Gringo pronunciation, so I wouldn't be one to correct it.

thanks for asking

Tchaikovsky

CHAY - as in Chinese for tea (chaj)

edit : I think CH + eye is the same prononciation

KOV - cough is OK if you pronounce it with "f" in the end,
this sillable is stressed

SKY - skij - don't forget j as the first letter in yoghurt

i am around so let's try to make it clear

So, I've got the first two syllables right: Cheye-COUGH (that gives us the 'f' sound you wanted)...

But while I've got you, I don't understand the sky with the 'y' from yogurt??? Help, please!

the 'y' from yogurt?

It's hard for us gringos to do it, but think of that semiconsonantal <y> sound, the one that's just far enough away from being a vowel that we would say "a yogurt" rather than "an yogurt" and put that sound on the end of the word. This is if you want to pronounce the name in Russian. For purposes of speaking with other gringos, your pronunciation is just fine.

the sound in the end of "toy"

It's probably pretty close, but for us gringos, putting that sound after an <i> is a little hard to do; we think we're already there, so how can we *go to it?
