try colloidal, but something tells me butter may not be a true colloid.
Icehouses were still in use as late as the middle of the last century. My father took me to one in Menominee, MI, which had humongous blocks of ice that had been carved out of Lake Michigan and pulled by horse to the icehouse, Don't remember hides, but there was certainly a lot of sawdust about.
Edit -- yep, butter is a colloid (YCLIU)
