Since when do students have rights? I never had any, so why should kids now have any?

wwh: Huh! Faldage: Huh? NOTE: Not helpful... I was thinking of some kinda acronym or something catchy. Oh yeah, perhaps rights wasn't exactly the best term to use now since it's associated with all that radicalism and anarchism etc.

Oh, that was just a little apprentice curmudgeon's comment on Dr Bill's little rant.
"By tunket, we din't never have none o them fancy computer things when I was kid! I don' see why nobody should have them nowadays."

Talk about not living out your childhood dreams through your kids! Ok, ok, I know your childhood dream may not have been giving advice to other's on how to change the school and you probably didn't go by the motto 'be heard or be herded', but.

Why "heard"?well, if you're getting heard, you're probably making a difference, so if you are leading the "heard", then you're probably making the most difference. and now I realize you're probably talking about the word form, rather than the phrase in question, because as I look at the word "heard", it looks pretty bizarre...

Some interesting and clever suggestions so far. However, being a very straight forward thinker, I would not go looking for the info you wish to promulgate under those headings. If I was a student and went on a search, I would tend to go straight for the most simple address ike "studentrights.com"

Prosaic but...

Perhaps, but rights just seems so much of a strong word for some reason - kinda associated with rather radical, 'let's bring down the system' sort of thinking... I dunno.

So you want to assert students' rights, but you don't want to upset anyone in the process? Hell, things have changed since I was at school ...

don't want to upset anyone in the processIf one of the key aims involved is to get authorities to even think about trusting the opinions of young people, then to go about upsetting anyone would be counter-productive as it will just enforce some peoples' opinions that young people cannot be sensible, compromising and realistic, with thier campaigns lost in some rather idealitic dream.
The best way to be taken seriously is to be reasonable and inoffensive - especially where it's least expected!

How do you know you're not? You want to start a students' rights website, well the oldies are just going to assume you are a neo-Marxist in socialist's clothing. That's got to be worth at least three chemical warheads (filled with sulphur dioxide) and half a teaspoon of smelly plutonium carefully gathered from a cyclotron hidden up a camel's rectum.

You are a positive danger to society, and you ought to be locked away.

I dunno what the world's coming to, I really don't. What is all this crap about students having rights anyway? They have wrongs, and even those are doled out with care, only to the most deserving cases, preferably to those students who are quadraplegics.

Bet you turn up to classes, too. Now there's something that's highly suspicious!

Like I said:Erk! How do I respond to that??
Though like the other thing I said, 'rights' wasn't the the best word, I know that a school can never be a democracy - it wouldn't work, but... well, they can't ignore us!! I mean, I sometimes feel that students are a bit more capable of independant thought than some people give credit for. Anyway, part of the reason there is so much voter apathy seems to be the loss of faith among young people that their ideas can make a difference.

No offense bonzaialsatian, but don'tcha think that your other peers would sooner visit an anti-establishment site like...jazzrumblers.org ordeathtofalsemetal.com You could then give them your unhip messages about pratical matters after you've got them hooked.

Naw, it's like docs everywhere do: It's relabelled as something else, and that turns out to be incurable instead. Such as the move from RSI to OOS. Sounds better, I guess. And the original stops turning up in the "We dunno how to fix that" stats.

You could then give them your unhip messages about pratical matters after you've got them hooked.I haven't actually seen any sites with practical, more workable advice on the students' rights/freedom/speakandbeheard/tryingtostayinoffensive issue - how'd I know it'd work or not 'till it's been tried? Anyway, it seems like a lot the people who go on the really extremist-seeming sites are either not really serious about change and just wanna seem cool, or have an interesting record of teacher assault and exclusions. (Note I didn't say all)

Well, thanks for sharing your opinion, I think! He asked for a name suggestion, not how you felt. You could have at least given him a name. Just because you didn't have students' rights, that doesn't mean the rest of us were without them. It's good to use your brain occassionaly. You should try it.
