Try this one. http://168.16.169.58/magritte.htm It's not as good a representation but it shows another example that I hadn't known about. *It isn't an apple.

Didn't you all have some discussion years back...

I think one set of definitions was round brackets() vs square brackets [] vs curly brackets{}, also known sometimes as (parentheses) [brackets] and {braces}.

To add to these I now offer by extension: <pointy brackets>.

Really? Thanks for pointing that out...you learn something new everyday. Could you post a picture of a cigar or a baseball bat next so I can find out what those things look like, too.

If an apple won't admit to being an apple perhaps it's got the pip? Of course, if an Apple won't admit to being an Apple, well, that's fully understandable. President Jobs, indeed!

The thing that weren't an apple din't say squat about what it were or weren't. It were the artist what said it weren't an apple. He's the one what painted it so I'd be inclined to believe him.

Oh? Ever heard of Salvadore Dali? Who'd have believed anything he said? Except Gala, of course, who clearly believed him when he said "Marry me, my sweet, and I'll paint you nude, half-dressed, fully dressed and as part of some animal, and make you famous!". Well, maybe he was speaking the truth about that!

Besides which, I've seen the picture (or a picture of the picture) and I'm positive that it's a picture of an apple and not an apple per se.

Well, technically, guys...if you want to be boringly Descartes about all this:

It's not an apple, it is a painting of an apple.

It's not an apple, it is a photograph of an apple.

If you can't eat it, then it's obviously not an apple.

I mean, is this a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup?:

It is an apple.

An apple is more than the actual fruit. In our language, we name things. And we name drawings of familiar forms, such as apples, with the words from the language.

Sorry. Show me a drawing of an apple and I'll use my language to identify what you've shown me--the word my language provides for that drawing--tough luck--is apple.

All that said, I love the art! I love the written "This is not an apple." It's humorous. and even ironically so
