I came across a word today that was new to me and I rather like it, thought y'all might not know it. I Googled it and found the definition, so I guess it can’t be that new:
Chugger – one of those people who stand on streets with collecting tins (or worse; direct-debit forms) and effectively mUG passers by for CHarity (or other supposed worthy cause)... a charity mugger.
Dear dxb: Must be UK usage. I got dozens of hits, mostly for fish baits, but none for charity bandits.
If you put in "charity chugger" on Google, you get to the meat, Bill.
EDIT: This gives quite a good explanation of the phenomenon: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2090680.stm
