To me, Xenophon's Anabasis is really the catabasis, until they could see "Thalassa,Thalassa!"

the original, narrow sense of the word meant a "stepping up", a military march from the coast to the interior of a country. contrariwise, katabasis meant a "stepping down" from the interior to the coast.
