I searched for "blunderbuss" which is the bell muzzled gun often erroneiously shown in Thanksgiving cartoons as weapon to shoot the turkey. It is of Dutch origin, but there seems to be no basis for alleging Pilgrims used them. http://www.plimoth.org/ There is really a lot to browse for.
