Flat, in this context, refers to a, usually, roughly 4'x8' piece of framework covered with any of a variety of coverings designed to appear to be a wall (brick, stone, wood paneling or whatever) or lattice work and used as a backdrop in a stage or TV production. It's typically supported by props in the back and secured in place by sandbags.

Side flats as opposed to what other kinds of flats?

onstage/upstage flats. my guess is that the side flats refer to those used to block the view of the wings. sometimes curtains are used, which are called "legs".

Thanks, et'.

And while we're talking about the stage, what are those short lengths of curtains that run across the upper part of the stage called? The ones upstage of the proscenium?

For some reason I'm thinking the word flies...that's not it, but there may be some connection...no, not related to the wings--but what are those short curtains called?

and

http://www.mariettadrapery.com/other/stage/

looks as if they're called "ceiling borders", though I bet there's another name for them...
