A spelling bee word worth knowing, for a change.
rhyton
n.
Gr, neut. of rhytos, flowing, akin to rheein, to flow: see STREAM6 an ancient Greek cup shaped like a drinking horn and typically made in the form of an animal‘s head
Just afte WWII, I was in my home town library, waiting at librarian's desk to have books checked
out. I noticed and elephant sized book of color pictures of archeological treasures, and opened it
I was astounded to see a huge Krater with a half dozen naked males dancing in a circle
around it, each leaning backwards balancing a rhyton on the tip of his erect penis.
I have searched the Internet vainly hoping to find that picture again.Wordcrazy is a
specialist in such art books, but she couldn't find it.
balancing a rhyton on the tip of his erect penis
These rhyton thingies are small and light, then, are they? coz this image boggles my mind! Just how strong (lifting/balancing-wise, I mean!) *is* an erect penis?
Just how strong
In this case, just as strong as the artist who made the krater wants them to be.
In reply to:Just how strong (lifting/balancing-wise, I mean!) *is* an erect penis?
Heh heh. This question will only lead to trouble. I think the answer belongs somewhere in this thread: http://wordsmith.org/board/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=words&Number=86413&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5
an erect penis: mightier than the sword.
TEd
Dear TEd: do you know the word for sheath?
Well, I did manage to find a picture of a rhyton; it's not quite halfway down:

Also, take a look at the name of a lecturer on the subject:
Dr Aristodemos Anastassiades. Isn't that a wonderful name?
It's safe to assume that I do.
TEd. who is not Sheiking in his boots
TEd
Dear TEd: I can remember when a Sheik was a little rubber boot.
Caligula was a little boot. But he was an emperor not a sheikh.
