The well was perhaps thirty feet ll below the level of the hill behind the house, and a continuous 5 gallons or more of water flowed from the faucet constantly, day and night. I was told that it was an artesian well, but it was a long time before I knew the origin of the name. artesian - 1830, from Fr. artésien "of Artois," French province where such wells were first bored 18c. A tilted porous rock layer ran from the house upwards under the hill behind it.
