...uh...I might have fudged a little...
But before the Dutch Elm Blight the great elms were "admirably suited for the manufacture of cooperage, kitchenette furniture, flooring, baskets, vehicle parts, and woodenware." according to Ellwood S. and J. George Harrar in their book "Guide To Southern Trees".
So don't you all go thinking I made up that french part too...
