And time again I find words in TIME that I think are not well chosen.
In the Oct. 14 issue, in the seventh of "7 questions to pnder" p.34:
"One side argues this war could stanch terrorism, while another
argues it could breed it."Stanch" can mean "check" or "stop" but seems not as
good a choice as "check". Perhaps the most common use of "stanch"
is to stop bleeding, to stop the loss of something valuable. Surely
terrorism is not something valuable.
Please comment.
they're probably thinking about terrorism as oozing out, bleeding the world... it is something that should be held in, not released. just a thought. I think there were better words they might have chosen, but the blood reference is apt...
