CD - I think this is a candidate for contraction. Take 'perforated' and 'insert', concertina them, and you've got the very apt 'perfert'.

As was already noted, the loose cards are blow-in cards. The attached cards are bind-in cards. Bind-in/Blow-in cards/envelopes
Subscription devices, usually standard size postcards, which are either inserted or bound into a magazine. The card/envelope should have a business reply mechanism and should allow individuals to charge-or be billed for-the subscription. Magazines that do not have the capacity to invoice should select envelopes which allow for the easy return of personal checks. Bind-ins/blow-ins are used predominantly to convert single-copy buyers into subscribers.

Then why can't they just leave them out of subscription copies! "Bon Appetit" is a prime offender - must have 6 or 8 of the annoyances in every issue.

I'm with Dr.Bill(wwh) on this one. To be nice (blech) let's just call them "waste material". The ones that fall out when you read through the magazine are called "fall outs" (I believe). Either way, stapled in or dropping out, the annoyance they have created has clearly had an adverse effect on the members of this board, so if anyone reading this has any*thing to say/do about it, PLESE MAKE THEM STOP PUTTING THEM THERE!!!

i think they also include them in subscription copies, because many subscription copies go to places like libraries, or doctors offices, or other places that are not individuals homes, and they want readers in these place to subscribe too.
blow ins are the worst, since they just fall out.
i suppose they do it, because a significant percentage lead to new subscriptions.

They'd have to have two production runs with retooling between or separate lines for sub and non-sub issues. That would significantly increase production costs.
I find the blow-ins easier to handle since there isn't the trouble in removing the little bound in ends that make riffling through the magazine so difficult.

the blow-ins make great bookmarks, or magazinemarks(magmarks?) as the case may be... they're annoying, but I like them better than spam email...

Welcome Carpedm (is that short for Carpe Diem - need to be wary of making assumptions!) and Harmless Drudge. I thought your real name would turn out to be Johnson ...
When I was in the newspaper industry several aeons ago, all that crap was inserted by hand. We used to employ students to do the work. Now, of course, it's all mechanised and they are called blow-ins. Guess what the task of managing the machine was called?
There's a really fancy machine that does the bind-ins for magazines. I saw one working a few years ago.
The idiot also known as Capfka ...
