Yeahbut�, Yeahbut�...language is constantly evolving, Faldage. It's called descriptivism...remember?

Notice in the 1911 encyclopedia passage it's still wer-; so when and why did it change to were-?
Perhaps when some frightened soul kept crying out, "Where de wolf?!!"...and they dropped the "h"?
