Many Americans have made themselves ridiculous trying to claim to be
armigerous. Mark Twain wrote about such a family that had a tradit;ion
the US family founder had left England as the result of the unfortunate
outcome of a cavalry engagement. But when one of the family went to
England to investigate, he learned that the "cavalry engagement" had
in fact been horse stealing.
