coccyx
n.,
pl. coccyges, cuckoo < Gr kokkyx (< kokku, echoic of its cry): so called because shaped like a cuckoo‘s beak6 a small, triangular bone at the lower end of the vertebral column, formed by the fusion of four rudimentary vertebrae and articulating with the sacrum
That's a cuckoo name.
So what about the geococcyx californianus?
Dear Faldage: there are indeed some geo class coccykers and terminal orifices
here in California.
I just learned something today about cuckoos that was pretty astonishing. OK. I'd heard that cuckoos put their eggs into another bird's nest so that the other bird could do all the parenting. But I hadn't heard that the baby cuckoo--before opening its eyes--pushes the competing eggs out of the nest, just like Humpty Dumpty!
This is animal behavior worth knowing about. If you see a cuckoo putting its egg into a nest: Do NOT remain underneath that nest!!! You will end up with egg in your face!
Bird regards,
WW
Dear WW: Here is a URL you might enjoy looking at. It also gives titles etc. for some new
books you might be able to borrow through your library.
