Carnival means "O flesh, farewell."

Carnation is a flesh colored flower.

A carnivore eats flesh.

What other words have this root?

I wonder if this is why Brief Encounter was filmed at Carnforth?

Aren't the carnassials the 'scissor' teeth the carnivores use for tearing flesh?

I prefer carnubial to carnal. The expression <having had carnal knowledge of somebody> seems so much harsher than <sharing carnubial bliss >. Mind you, (and I am speaking from the gutter here), carnal knowledge also brings up the image of a passionate, hot and sweaty, sexual encounter, which is not so bad either. All right, I've changed my mind .

And, for Australian Rules football fans, there's always 'Carn the Bombers'.

Actually I thought 'Carn the Pies' (short for the Magpies) would be a nice tie-in with the theme, drawing in an oblique reference to that Aussie icon The Meat Pie and homage to the pieman who posted the original question.
