Why is the head of a meeting called the chairman?
In a smaller meeting held around a table, all attendees are seated, the "chairman" no more so than any other. And in a mass assembly, the chair may even be standing at a podium -- so that the "chair" is in fact the only one who is not occupying a chair.
So why to we call the meeting-leader the "chairman" or "chairwoman"?
