Another Arabic word worth knowing is "azimuth" useful in navigation, and very basic astronomy, referring to an angle need to locate a point with relation to a ship, or position of star relative to observer.

"The azimuth circle is an important auxiliary device used for indicating azimuth, or the bearing of an object, its direction measured from the north point. It is a graduated ring with sight vanes that is designed to fit snugly over a compass or a compass repeater; it provides a means of taking bearings of both terrestrial objects and celestial bodies.

zenith comes from the very same root! it came from arabic to old spanish as zenit, and the to french, and finally english!

azimuth, comes from the plural (as Dr bill posted) zenith comes from the singular, samt (path) arras--it is the samt that give english zenith.
