Hi Aji - if you meam how to make the sound, try this:

jjjjon~ruh

- where the first sound is the soft J that is nearly like the 'shhhhh' sound in wash, with the addition of 'voice' by vibrating your vocal chords instead of just breathing out.

If you mean its typical meaning, I suggest it is an artistic style or category - the word comes from the Latin word genus, suggesting 'birth or origin'.

I hope that helps a bit.

Because it is a word of French origin, it is not typical of English words. Few of our words pronounce the R at the back of the throat, as is done with Genre. If I may make a pun, it is almost in a genre of its own in English!

I am happy to see someone from China on this board!

WELCOME Aji! How exciting to have someone from China here.

I don't have any more answers to your question, but hopefully Geoff, Dr Bill (wwh) and Maverick have been able to help you out. Guys, was there a website mentioned a little while ago which had .wav files with pronounciation?

Stay with us ... do not worry about making mistakes ...we make plenty of mistakes and we (English speakers) really should know better!

we make plenty of mistakes

If each of us knew everything already, what would we have to discuss or to ask?
