Grovelling apologies to caradea, whose definition was inadvertently omitted. Her definition was: a succinct vitriolic speech. She is fully entitled to demonstrate.

A grand council of hogmasters should be convened to try the prisoner before the bar, one Max Quordlepleen, who admits to having let his eye inadvertently fall on the correct definition and then voting for it. In mitigation, it should be noted that he did confess, thus saving the Crown the expense of sending the hogmasters to New Zealand to investigate his almost unprecedented correct “guess”.

For those who are interested, I came across this word in a novel called "The House of Doctor Dee" by Peter Ackroyd.

Chapter 4 page 123:

But what kind of 'recipe' was this?

So that it may grow without the help of any womb! This is the secret of all secrets, and must remain so until that time of the end when all secrets will be revealed. Let the spagyricus take the seed and place it within a sealed glass, for preference the glass of Antwerp in which all light and heat seem to prosper.

>apologies to caradea, whose definition was inadvertently omitted.

in an Emergency Meeting of the Rules Committee (RC), convened in nudiustertian virtual time, it was determined that, inasmuch as this contingency is not covered by the Basic Rules of Hogwash®, nor is it implied under the concept of estoppel, it has been ruled by the aforementioned RC that caradea should consider herself well-compensated in that she did receive an actual and public apology from the hogmaster, who after all is only hoglike.
- the RC

as an aside, the RC would like to remind all that, were normal scoring still in effect (and it's not), only the players (those who submitted def'ns) would score two(2) points for a correct guess, and unlookers would score just 1 -- this to encourage "playing" status, of course.

So did he or didn't he?

Please reference the pre-defined and written rule that states that what Max did was worthy of trial.

(obviously it's 'cheating', but did the rules spell it out? Sparteye, we'll need your expertise here....)

Please allow me to clarify:

I do not suspect Max of 'cheating,' I'm just confused as to what Bingley means. Given Max's track record, if he did indeed guess correctly, he should be give due props, as Sparteye would say.

Bingley,

I was sooooooooooooooooo excited when AnnaS voted for my G! And you didn't give me any points for it!

So, if the scorer makes a mistake (that is, if you did make a mistake), do I get a bonus for noticing it? And, if there's a rule that I'm unaware of that keeps me from receiving a point for G if AnnaS votes for it, then: never mind!

Best regards,
WordWannabe

Anna, to put it more clearly, while he was looking for similar words in composing his definition, Max accidentally looked up the word spagyricus. He then voted for the correct definition. Perhaps I'm wrong but I think that although it's legitimate to vote on a word that you happen to already know, looking up a word once it's been posted disqualifies you from voting in that round.

Speaking for a large group of Hogwashers, I'd like to say - bedamned Max's indiscretions, what happened to caladea's definition?

The RC wrote (mealy- mouthed)...

[well, caradea should consider herself well-compensated in that she did receive an actual and public apology from the hogmaster, who after all is only a hogman- heh heh heh.]

Well let it be known that we the ad hoc's are not amused by the high handed manner of the head hog and we will seek relief and satisfaction.

RMW and the Committee of Seven.

Thank you for that clarification, Bingley! Yes, you're right on the rules (far as I know).
...and thanks for awarding WW her well-deserved point.
