Well, it seems that a carpel is also the female part of a flower...kinda puts a whole new slant on Carpal Tunnel, doesn't it? (seeing-as-how-the-Gutter Police-are-away-on-vacation-e)
My memory was jogged back to this piece of long-forgotten high school Biology 101 flora datum by this article about Archaefructus sinensis, the just-discovered 125 million year old ancestor of all flowering plants (fossil found in China):
