Well, the way we always played scrabble, you always had 7 tiles (unless it was close to the end of the game.) you played #, and took the same # more to add to your rack. since you build your word on another word, unless you crossed two words, the longest possible word was 8 letters long.

long ago, i made a small bag out of oxford cloth, with a draw string top. instead of painsakingly turn each tile over, we would finish the game by gently folding the board, an directing all the tiles into the bag.. then shake the bag. to play, just reach in and grab.
