It's a dance isn't it? 14th C or something like that (sorry history was never my strong point) - big dresses, corsets and men in frock coats, that kind of thing.

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht

As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner

You should have seen Aunt Fannie, when she sat on a bear trap and danced the Ascot Gavotte.

There's also a gavotte in Leonard Bernstein's score for Candide. The lyrics are incredibly clever, written by Dorothy Parker and Richard Wilbur. I'd quote 'em if I could find 'em.

gavotte

Thanks for bringing this up, Helen.
Akshually®, I was wondering about it when I posted that lyric. Had an inkling, but...too lazy to LIU.
Of course, like many lyrics, I never quite caught that in the song, either.

Then you flew your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun

Do you remember that eclipse, Helen? (It occurred in 1967 and, in New York City and throughout southern New England, was significant though partial.)

And who is the person who was "so vain"?

Who was the person who was so vain, Keiva? I heard, way back then, that it was Warren Beatty, but I sure would love to have that factoid corrected if someone knows better.

Best regards,
Wordwind

Over the years, Carly Simon has been reluctant to disclose who she wrote that song about. For the scoop, the dish, etc.:http://www.carlysimon.com/vain/vain.htm

Before looking at the link, (and I haven't yet, so I don't know if the answer's in there)...

Does anyone know who was recruites at the spur-of-the-moment as a backup singer for the recording session of Your So Vain? Don't give it away for everyone. Answer in white in a couple of days.

[edit:] Yup! Answer's on the link...just so folks know.
