A woman Of perplexity A woman For eternity A woman Of the land A woman For a man I'm down On my knees And I'm saying Please believe me -SHE WAS WAITIN' FOR HER MOTHER AT THE STATION IN TORINO AND YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU BABY BUT IT'S GETTING TOO HEAVY TO LAUGH (L) (c. 1970) -Shawn Phillips

I write this song in memory of a woman that I knew she loved me much and I loved her but then she never knew and I was forced to go away there was nothing I could say I had to leave that very day for almost two years or more
and now she's gone and I am left with memories of her breast and days of life and nights of love and all the wondrous rest I shan't forget and the effect it isn't even finished yet it started 'fore we'd barely met ten long years ago yesterday
For Her- Shawn Phillips

THIS MAGIC MOMENT
This magic moment So fifferent and so new Was like any other Until I kissed you And then it happened It took me by surprise I knew that you felt it too By the look in your eyes
Sweeter than wine Softer than a summer night Everything I wanna have Whenever I hold you tight

There was a jolly Milum once Lived on the river Dee; He work'd, and sung, from morn till night, No Lark more blythe than he. And this the burden of his song, For ever us'd to be, "I care for nobody, not I, If no one cares for me."
-- Issac Bickerstaffe, Love in a Village (a very successful opera of 1762)

CHANTILLY LACE
AND A PRETTY FACE
AND A PONY TAIL HANGIN` DOWN,
WIGGLE IN HER WALK
AND A GIGGLE IN HER TALK,
MAKES THE WORLD GO `ROUND
AIN`T NOTHIN` IN THIS WORLD
LIKE A BIG EYED GIRL
TO MAKE ME ACT SO FUNNY,
MAKE ME SPEND MY MONEY,
MAKE ME FEEL REAL LOOSE
LIKE A LONG NECKED GOOSE,
LIKE A GIRL.
(spoken:)
OH, BABY, THAT`SA WHAT I LIKE.

You know the landlord rang my front doorbell, I let it ring for a long, long, spell, I peeped through the window and pulled back the blinds, I said, wont you tell me what is on your mind?
He said "Money Honey" Doo wap de die, If you want to get along with me.
Well I screamed and I hollered I was so hard pressed, I called the woman that I loved best, I finally got my Baby 'bout half passed three She said, wont you tell me why you calling me?
I said "Money Honey" Do wap de die If you want to get along with me.

This truly great song with well-crafted, highly imaginative, poignantly poetic lyric merits a pasting in its remarkable ripeness. Right?
One morning when I was out shopping Though you'll find it hard to believe A little blue man came out of the crowd And timidly tugged at my sleeve
"I wuv you! I wuv you!" said the little blue man "I wuv you! I wuv you to bits!" "I wuv you!" He loved me, said the little blue man And scared me right out of my wits
I hurried back to my apartment I rushed in and I closed the door But there on my desk stood the little blue man Who started to tell me once more
"I wuv you! I wuv you!" said the little blue man "I wuv you! I wuv you to bits!" "I wuv you!" He loved me, said the little blue man And scared me right out of my wits
For weeks after that I was haunted Though no one could see him but me Right by my side was the little blue man Wherever I happened to be
"I wuv you! I wuv you!" said the little blue man "I wuv you! I wuv you to bits!" "I wuv you!" He loved me, said the little blue man And scared me right out of my wits
One evening in wild desperation I rushed to a rooftop in town And over the side pushed the little blue man Who sang to me on the way down "I wuuuuv youuuu!"
I whispered, "Thank goodness that's over!" I smiled as I hurried outside But there on the street stood the little blue man Who said with a tear in his eye "I don't wuv you anymore."

My analyst told me that I was right out of my head The way he described it, he said I'd be better dead than live I didn't listen to his jive I knew all along he was all wrong And I knew that he thought I was crazy but I'm not Oh no!
My analyst told me that I was right out of my head He said I'd need treatment but I'm not that easily led He said I was the type that was most inclined When out of his sight to be out of my mind And he thought I was nuts, no more ifs or ands or buts Oh no!
They say as a child I appeared a little bit wild With all my crazy ideas But I knew what was happenin', I knew I was a genius What's so strange when you know that you're a wizard at three? I knew that this was meant to be
Well I heard little children were supposed to sleep tight That's why I drank a fifth of vodka one night My parents got frantic, didn't know what to do But I saw some crazy scenes before I came to Now do you think I was crazy? I may have been only three but I was swingin'
They all laughed at Al Graham Bell They all laughed at Edison and also at Einstein So why should I feel sorry if they just couldn't understand The litany and the logic that went on in my head? I had a brain, it was insane Don't you let them laugh at me When I refused to ride on all those double decker buses All because there was no driver on the top
My analyst told me that I was right out of my head The way he described it, he said I'd be better dead than live I didn't listen to his jive I knew all along he was all wrong And I knew that he thought I was crazy but I'm not Oh no!
My analyst told me that I was right out of my head But I said "Dear doctor, I think that it's you instead 'Cause I have got a thing that's unique and new It proves that I'll have the last laugh on you 'Cause instead of one head... I got two And you know two heads are better than one"

They laughed at me, wanting you. Said I was reaching for the moon. But oh, you came through. Now they'll have to change their tune.
They all said we never would be happy. Darling, let's take a bow. But ho, ho, ho. Who's got the last laugh now?

~The summer wind came blowin' in from across the sea
It lingered there, to touch your hair and walk with me
All summer long, we sang a song and then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind

WO'N day while I was eating down at Smokey Joe's CafeJust sitting digging on the scene at Smokey Joe's CafeA chick came walking through the door, That I had never seen before At least I'd never seen her down at Smokey Joe's CafeAnd I started shaking -when she sat right down next to me. Her knees were almost touching mine at smokey Joe's CafeA chill was running down my spine at Smokey Joe's CafeI could smell her sweet perfume she looked at me my heart went Boom And everybody in the room at Smokey Joe's CafeSaid: Man be careful- that chick belongs to Smokey Joe!Then from behind the counter out stepped a man A chef's hat on his head, a knife in his hand He grabbed me by the collar and began to shout... You better eat up all your beans boy and clear right on out Well I know I'll never eat again at Smokey Joe's CafeAnd so we'll never meet again at Smokey Joe's CafeI'd rather eat my Chili beans at Jims or Jacks or Johns or Jeans, Than take my chances on the scene at Smokey Joe's Cafe. I risked my life - at Smokey Joe's that crazy fool. SMOKEY JOE"S CAFE-The Robins(who later became) The Coasters ( I'm so smart. I remembered all the words.)

COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER In a little café just the other side of the border She was just sitting there givin' me looks that made my mouth water So I started walking her way She belonged to that man, José And I knew, yes I knew I should leave When I heard her say, yeah Come a little bit closer You're my kind of man So big and so strong Come a little bit closer I'm all alone And the night is so long

Uranium money Is booming in the old home town now It's putting up sleek concrete Tearing the old landmarks down now Paving over brave little parks Ripping off Indian land again How long--how long Short sighted business men Ah, nothing lasts for long-- Nothing lasts for long-- Nothing lasts for long-- Down at the Chinese Cafe We'd be dreaming on our dimes We'd be playing-- "You give your love, so sweetly" One more time

And now I know Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say I thought I knew But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City
Until you've seen this trash can dream come true You stand at the edge while people run you through And I thank the Lord there's people out there like you I thank the Lord there's people out there like you
While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers Turn around and say good morning to the night For unless they see the sky But they can't and that is why They know not if it's dark outside or light
This Broadway's got It's got a lot of songs to sing If I knew the tunes I might join in I'll go my way alone Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in New York City
Subway's no way for a good man to go down Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown And I thank the Lord for the people I have found I thank the Lord for the people I have found
Elton John, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters"

Streets of London Ralph McTell
Have you seen the old man in the closed down market Kicking up the paper with his worn out shoes In his eyes you see no pride And held loosely by his side, yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news
How can you tell me you're lonely And say, for you, that the sun don't shine Let me take you by the hand And lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old gal who walks the streets of London Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags She's no time for talkin, she just keeps right on walkin Carryin her home in two carrier bags
In the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven Same old man sitting there on his own Looking at the world over the rim of his teacup Each tea lasts an hour and he goes home alone
Have you seen the old man outside the seaman's mission Memory fading like the ribbons that he wears In our winter city, the rain cries a little pity For one more forgotten hero in a world that doesn't care
(do you know this as a blue/rap? a ballad? not at all? i learned it as a ballad, as did my daughter, in the early 90's it was done as a rap song, and her friends were all surprized at its previous existance.)

We are made of sunbeams we are made of molten glass we can light the fire of living we can learn with an ugly past we can roar into the future like a bull with battered brains and it's a mighty thin line 'tween livin' and dyin and all these stupid games and it all depends on if you use your mind

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life. So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind. Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial. For what it's worth, it was worth all the while. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. “Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!” He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. “And, hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy. ’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the momeraths outgrabe. Lewis Carroll -- Jabberwocky AnnaS & Keiva: Might as well get the whole thing...Must add this version: The Jabberwocky Spellchecked by Modern Technology Teas broiling and the silty tomes Did gyrate and gamble in the wave All misery were the boroughs And the mime rashes outraged. "Beware the Jabberer, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch Beware the jujitsu bird and shun The furious bantering." He took his viracity sword in hand: Long time the maximal foe he sought So rested he by the tom-tom tree And stood awhile in thought. And as in Irish thought he stood, The Jabberer, with eyes of flame Came waffling through the Tulsa wood And burbled as it came. One two, One Two! And through and through The voracity blade went snicker snack! He left it dead and with its head He went glamoring back. "And hats thou slain the Jabberer! Come to my arms, my bleakish boy! O farmhouse day! Calculi! Canary! He chortled in his joy. Teas broiling and the silty tomes Did gyrate and gamble in the wave All misery were the boroughs And the mime rashes outraged. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (Lotus version) Twas bridling and the slight toes Did gyre and gimlet in the wade All mimes were the boroughs And the modem rats outgrew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (MS Word version) Twas brisling, and the smithy toes Did gyre and gamble in the wade: All missy were the borogroves, And the mom rates outgrabe. [Edit] I've been reminded that this (the original) is known as a poem, not a song. True, and by rights it would be placed more appropriately in the Poetry thread. However, <rimshot> a cursory study reveals that it has been set to music at least four times. st

Looka there honey o-o-e, looka there honey, mercy me. Looka there honey o-o-e, way over there by the peacher tree.
Now I love yo peaches, they so mellow and fine, When if we start lovin', Every now and then they run across my mind.
Looka there honey, o-o-e, looka there baby, mercy me, Way over there by the peacher tree.

Look at the widow, Bloody great cow,
Isn't grand boys, to be bloody well dead? Lets not have a wimper, lets have a bloody great cry, and always remember the longer you live, the sooner you bloody well die!
Look at the preacher, Bloody great hypocrite,
Isn't grand boys to be bloody well dead? (etc)
irish traditional sung to a lively, cheerful tune, like all great irish songs about death!)

Hey lady--you got the love I need Maybe more than enough. Oh Darling... walk a while with me You've got so much...
Many have I loved - Many times been bitten Many times I've gazed along the open road.
Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.
Many dreams come true and some have silver linings I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.
Over The Hills And Far Away -Led Zepplin

To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go...

I have a dream, a song to sing To help me cope with anything If you see the wonder of a fairy tale You can take the future even if you fail I believe in angels Something good in everything I see I believe in angels When I know the time is right for me I'll cross the stream - I have a dream

And though I'm still as pure as mountain snow... You can tell my uncle here and now 'Cause he's my agent anyhow But don't tell Mama what you know
