A while back, we had a thread on peppers.. (the vegetable) but i realized, we never really covered peppered-- "Her everyday speach is peppered with jagon from her job"

or, for that, matter salt.. (we have covered below the salt, and salt cellars) but not salted.--"His speach is frequently salted with vulgar words.."

and i was think about other ways we spice up our language..

Those who relish this topic are welcome to drink to it and get pickled. But don't get so soused you act like a dill and pull out the aerosol to mace your neighbor.

gee, i was afraid you'd handle the subject gingerly..

moving on to food in general.. this topic could become a hot potato!

but obviously, people here like some zest in their language.

In Spanish, they have a saying "Me vale un comino." This is said while flicking your eye tooth with your fingernail.
ROUGH TRANSLATION "That's about as worthless as one cumin seed." It's one of those things that doesn't translate directly.

Dear consuelo: I found your phrase in many sites, but could not figure out its meaning. Why the flick to the canine?

Ever get a whole cumin seed caught between your teeth? That's irritating, bothersome, and sometimes slightly painful.

PS Dr. Bill, I put the translation in white in the first post.

Cumin seed no. Other short curly objects yes.

Now that I think of it, cumin seed sounds like something else.

Dear consuelo: I think it unlikely that you remember that "twist" used to be a slang term for a complaisant young damsel.

I know that biting the thumb can be an insult, but never could figure out why.

My best guess would be that it is some kind of insult to the macho male's member. Dunno for a fact.

But biting the enemy's member does not appeal to me. And the Altoids are said to enhance Monica Lewinsky's specialty. Sounds very doubtful to me.

...Altoids are said to enhance...

Well, they are "curiously strong"!

...Monica Lewinsky's specialty.

Don't sugar coat it!
