In www.bartleby.com I found Harvard Classics, and am reading Père Goriot, where I encountered a word I hadn't seen for a long time: scullery. It has an interesting etymology:
scul[ler[y 7skul4!r c8
n.,
pl. 3ler[ies 5ME, room for care of plates, pans, and kitchen utensils < OFr escuelerie < escuelle, a dish < L scutella, salver, tray, dim. of scutra, platter6 a room adjoining the kitchen, where pots and pans are cleaned and stored or where the rough, dirty kitchen work is done
So what once took up a whole room is now the dishwasher and kitchen sink.
