This is my week! I cannot help myself : I have to add the more used meaning of "imbroglio" ( last word in AWAD) Imbroglio means also "fraud", mostly against some simple-minded people. Do you remember "Paper Moon"? The man there was a perfect example of "imbroglione". Ciao Emanuela

We salute you this week even more than usual, Emanuela! Thank you for that enlightenment. A term here that would fit this description also is "con artist", or just con. A con artist runs a con game. But now, a new question occurs! I can't remember what word con comes from. Folks...?

The full title used to be "confidence trickster"
But "con" is also used, in a slightly different context, as an abbreviation of "convict", especially by the police, prison officers and the convicted persons themselves. When you are "on the out" (i.e., released from prison) you become and "ex-con."
