by all means, check local libraries and colleges for OED access - if you have a library card, you may have online access to the OED via proxy server! The Minneapolis Public Library offers this service. of course, there are obvious advantages to having the CD-ROM, but the online service offers the latest data base and has fixed a couple of noxious little problems the CD version has.
as to the MW v. AHD debate, I would still opt for MW, and I wonder if they've updated in the last couple of years, perhaps adding audio (the online version now offers this, keeping up with AHD/Bartleby).

the cost comparison involves on the order of an order of magnitude (just like with the hard copy versions).

max-- i too have been doing that mental calculation.. and i am beginning to think i am being penny wise and pound foolish.
i was only to glad to see the back of my ex husband.. but i still miss the compact OED-(it was a line item in our divorce settlement.. i got several partridges, and other specialized dictionaries; actually every other dictionary in the house!)
but $350-- it about a dollar day..(the first year..) after two years, the cost is down to $0.50.. by year 3, only 33 Cents.. year 4, a mere quarter a day.. for something i really like.. and would enjoy owning..
do you think in the course of four years you can get 25 cent a day's worth of pleasure out of owning it? and how out of date will it be in 4 years? how much do you spend now on coffee, (from starbucks?) or cable TV, or any of the other so called convienence of life? and you are still denying yourself the pleasure of owning the OED?
(no i don't work for Oxford, and no i am not taking orders.. but i have been thinking for my self about the words i live by, and things i value.. )
