Many of us have expressed our concern for the recent lack of new members joining the board, so I've come up with an idea. Why don't we host a week of words for AWAD? We could dig up 5 words that we've discussed (separate from previous AWADs) and along with the word and it's definition, we could provide a link to that thread. This would be fun for us and surely get more people interested in the board. So, bring on the words!

great idea.. i sort of started to do it.. but i guess my words where not interesting enough.. all where toponyms, but fabic ones.. (seersucker, which has been done started me thinking about it..) but they haven't appeared.. so i guess they were too pedestrian..
one of mine fun words from awas talk is next.
like good, better, best, next is a superative.. nigh, near, next! whoda thunk it? i never realize it till i read it here!

Wonderful idea, JazzO. Three things: 1.) Anu will have to like the idea; 2.) he always has a theme for the week, though I suppose that week's could be "contributions by AWADtalk members"; 3.) anyone submitting a possibility ought to do a Search, to make sure it hasn't been done before.

Jackie,
I sent an e-mail to him right before I started this thread here, so I've yet to hear back from him, but considering he's had guest Wordsmiths before and had blurbs in some e-mailings saying "Want to be a guest Wordsmith?" I think he'll be fine with the idea. But I don't know yet.

Er, Jackie, you each used the word "he", and Jazzo followed your usage with "he" and "him". Did you perhaps intend "H e" and "H im"? | | |

Terrific idea Jazz. Now I wish I had the memory that you all seem to have.
When we discuss a word I'll get all enthused and bug my hubby "ooo, ooo, do you know that XXX came down from old English..." (imagine his rolling of eyes here)...but I'll be danged if I can remember where or when the word was discussed after two weeks have passed.

 So, dig up them words!

Did you perhaps intend "He" and "Him"? Yes, as a matter of fact, I did, and nearly put it that way! JazzO, I'm delghted the idea flew. Have to put on my thinking cap, but I doubt I'll be able to come up with one that hasn't been done before. | | |

Love this, Jazzo! How do we pick 'em? Do we keep a thread as sort of a "word bank" here on I & A for nominations and to avoid duplications?

Ohh--kay..., I just tried to Search these words (in AWAD, not here), and got this:Glimpse error
The search parameters caused an error in the call to Glimpse.
Please try your search again with different parameters.

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Output from Glimpse:
I have no idea what this means!

Anyway, I offer two words, for the sole reason that I've never heard either. I got the first in a PM, and the second in its definition. Both def.'s are from Atomica--I haven't the resources or knowledge for extensive look-up.

 tunicate--
 n.
Any of various chordate marine animals of the subphylum Tunicata or Urochordata having a cylindrical or globular body enclosed in a tough outer covering and including the sea squirts and salps.

 adj.
Of or relating to the tunicates.
 Anatomy. Having a tunic.
Botany. Having a tunic, as the bulb of an onion.
[Latin tunicātus, past participle of tunicāre, to clothe with a tunic, from tunica, tunic.

 salp
 n.
Any of various free-swimming tunicates of the genus Salpa, of warm seas, having a translucent, somewhat flattened, keglike body.

[From New Latin Salpa, genus name, from Latin, a kind of stockfish, from Greek salpē.]

 sal'pi·form' (săl'pə-fôrm') adj.

<confused look> I thought the idea was to link to past discussions about selected words, not just introduce new ones? (they *do neeed to be new to AWAD, and yes J, that seems to be the standard negative search result)

Do we keep a thread as sort of a "word bank" here on I & A for nominations and to avoid duplications?I figured we'd all post our suggestions here and then, possibly in another thread, post our 5 favorites from the pool of nominations. If there's a tie or feud, I guess I get to make the final decision. Perhaps a couple of the Hogwash words would be good suggestions. Some of them have sparked further discussion. | | |

Good, Jazzo...I was just going to suggest a week of Hogwash® words and found your post! And, tsuwm, I think if 5 folks volunteer to search for the link once we have the week's words we can trim the searching time to almost nothing. | | |

I figured we'd all post our suggestions here ... Perhaps a couple of the Hogwash words would be good suggestions.
It might be useful to find threads that gave us particular fun (whether Hogwash of not), and might be fun for the might be fun for the new folks to restart and develop on their own -- to have the same fun that we had then.

I'd particularly nominate mav's "brick house bertha" thread.

Yeahbut®
And I guess we also have to screen the links to cull out the threads that have too many of our famous AWAD wanderings, which might be a bit confusin' to a newcomer?

Whit, my thought (perhaps a silly one ) was that those threads should not be for reading, but rather for restarting, letting those who were not here the first time redevelop them now. For example, if I were one who hadn't been here to enjoy being part of the "brick-house" discussion when mav first raised it, I would love the chance to join such a discussion started anew.(no initial cap on the last word there! ] | | |

Maybe, we should start with some themes, and then, we could "join a team" for a theme (no limits, if we form 8 theme teams, i could be on all (not likely!) or none (again, not likely!)
some themes that have had a go as threads include

crossing the pond (either/both!-- word that have radically different meanings in UK, Oz, NZ, Canada and US)

Tools of the trade-printers words, and geology and, oh, i am not looking it up, fishes and sea creatures(itc/something/ology!)and other specialize words -- some of which have come into common usage..if coelacanth can be used in a tv commercial..

Words with interesting roots this is a theme Anu has used, and we certainly have explored it..

 and (your theme here!)
we could use some of anu themes.. or make up our own.. (a theme of anagrams? beheading words? and ducking, now on my way out, food
