I've also heard the term used frequently without the off when someone's been robbed or hustled..."What a rip!," "Looks like you just got ripped!"
So now that we have a solid and ancient etymology for "rip" in this semantic sense, I wonder when and why the off was added to the phrase. I'm thinkin' mid 20th Century. A-searchin' I will go!....
