F says: That was back when *we took the queen offn our stamps.and: Well, Duh! We took her off *before we became the US.Faldage, if there was no US then, who was the "we" who removed her from "our" stamps? [and btw, at that particular time would it not been a removal of "him", not of "her"?]

Come, come, now counselor. Surely you're not suggesting that we sprung fully formed from Tisquantum's brow.

She ain' there no more so what difference does it make?

Dear Faldage: Double D'uh. Post Office wasn't founded until good bit after Revolution.
Joke on me. The first American postal service was established in the colony of Massachusetts in 1639. From 1707 until the year before the American Revolution, the General Post Office in London controlled the postal service in America. In 1775 the Continental Congress resolved to have a postal system of its own, and Benjamin Franklin was elected to carry on the work. When a postal service was authorized by Congress in 1789 under the U.S. Constitution, the nation had 75 local post offices, and the mails were carried over 1875 mi (more than 3000 km) of postal routes.

But I remain unconvinced that any Queens pictures were on first stamps. Not sure of date of that.

Well, of course. We took her off before she even got there. Now that's proactive.

The adhesive postage stamp was invented by Rowland Hill in Britain (that's why UK stamps don't have the country's name on them) in 1840, long after the unfortunate events of 1776.

Could you enlighten me, please? It's like a default setting. The same logic that means US web sites don't have a country suffix.
