I hope and pray none of our board-friends are being affected by this catastrophe. Please check in and let us know you're all OK.

Dear WON,
Thanks for posting this, by the way. I saw some footage of the kangaroos jumping quickly to escape the fire. Highly disturbing and disturbed footage.
Australia? Can you hear us?

Thanks for the concern folks. I'm fine, FWIW, and a fair way from the fires. As far as I know, the other Aussies on the board are also out of harmsapostrophe?way, although it would definitely be nice to hear from them, just to be sure.

Now that we know you're OK, do you call them bush fires or what?

Doc, isn't Chatswood fairly near Sydney? That's where my friend Bridget lives, and I haven't heard from her. Also, sweet lapsus linguae, who seems to have disappeared, lives in Sydney. Have you any news about the place that you could share? Thanks.
Marty and lusy and Lucy are over 400 miles from Sydney, and Stales lives clear across the continent, so he's prolly ok. But would still like to hear.
Edit: I had forgotten Rusty, but he's 1200 miles away. Whew.

As Max pointed out, many of the fires are being lit by children. So sad. And geez... I thought USn's had the monopoly on anti-social behavior.
Still, and on a lighter note, I do sort of get a giggle every time I see a headline that begins "Bush fires...." and I wonder who George Dubya is kicking out of his cabinet. BTW, here in the land of the free and the home of the sociopaths we call 'em "bRush fires."

The Strine is pretty used to bush fires, although they are damned destructive. One year in the 1970s when I was tramping (hiking) in the Zildian Southern Alps, the snow on the mountains was literally pink from the dust that the smoke clouds from Striner bush fires had deposited.
My heart goes out to those families affected. I've seen an Aussie bush fire up close and personal, and they are bloody frightening things.
I hope everyone - regardless of whether they're on the Board or not - is okay.
The idiot also known as Capfka ...

I suspect you Ozzies are experiencing something similar to what happens regularly in Southern California. No fun, whether in one place or another.

Thanks for your concerns. In Tasmania we're still waiting for summer to start -- it's been grey and raining for months now. Unfortunately the heavy growth this has caused will be a fire hazard when it dries out (if it dries out!). We last had serious fires in Hobart in 1967 (with many lost lives and hundreds of lost houses).
