In the spirit of looking toward taking and extending the cup of kindness, I found this on the Net this morning and am wondering, "Why the 'Rabbie'?"
Words adapated from a traditional song by Rabbie Burns (1759-96)
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne?
CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne!
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp, And surely I'll be mine, And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet, For auld lang syne!
We twa hae run about the braes, And pou'd the gowans fine, But we've wander'd monie a weary fit, Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn Frae morning sun till dine, But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin auld lang syne.
And there's a hand my trusty fiere, And gie's a hand o thine, And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught, For auld lang syne
I imagine buckets of tears will be shed this year at the stroke of midnight. The melody itself is enough to call forth those tears as we hearken back to what's been lost. and nothing mundane there, tsuwm...
Best regards and kindness extended toward all of you, Wordwind

"Why the 'Rabbie'?"
It's not widely known, but he was, among other thangs, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi.

Far more widely known that he was not.

Yep, the first and last Calvinist Rabbi on record.
All seriousness aside, WW, pending confirmation from one of our cross-Ponders, that's how his name is pronounced in Scotland.

Auld Lang Syne
Scottish Version
Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne!
Chorus.-For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes, And pou'd the gowans fine; But we've wander'd mony a weary fit, Sin' auld lang syne. For auld, &c.
We twa hae paidl'd in the burn, Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin' auld lang syne. For auld, &c.
And there's a hand, my trusty fere! And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught, For auld lang syne. For auld, &c.
And surely ye'll be your pint stowp! And surely I'll be mine! And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet, For auld lang syne. For auld, &c.
- Poem by Robert Burns, 1788

If We Only Have Love, by Jacques Brel, has become the traditional year-end song for those of us who listen to the local classical music radio station.
If we only have love Then tomorrow will dawn And the days of our years Will rise on that morn
If we only have love To embrace without fears We will kiss with our eyes We will sleep without tears
If we only have love With our arms open wide Then the young and the old Will stand at our side
If we only have love Love that's falling like rain Then the parched desert earth Will grow green again
If we only have love For the hymn that we shout For the song that we sing Then we'll have a way out
If we only have love We can reach those in pain We can heal all our wounds We can use our own names
If we only have love We can melt all the guns And then give the new world To our daughters and sons
If we only have love Then Jerusalem stands And then death has no shadow There are no foreign lands
If we only have love We will never bow down We'll be tall as the pines Neither heroes nor clowns
If we only have love Then we'll only be men And we'll drink from the Grail To be born once again
Then with nothing at all But the little we are We'll have conquered all time All space, the sun, and the stars.

Not a song, but here's a poem about an uncertain hope for a new year.
The Darkling Thrush - dated 31st December 1900 by Thomas Hardy
I leant upon a coppice gate When Frost was spectre-gray, And Winter's dregs made desolate The weakening eye of day. The tangled bine-stems scored the sky Like strings of broken lyres, And all mankind that haunted nigh Had sought their household fires.
The land's sharp features seemed to be The Century's corpse outleant, His crypt the cloudy canopy, The wind his death-lament. The ancient pulse of germ and birth Was shrunken hard and dry, And every spirit upon earth Seemed fevourless as I.
At once a voice arose among The bleak twigs overhead In a full-hearted evensong Of joy illimited; An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small, In blast-beruffled plume, Had chosen thus to fling his soul Upon the growing gloom.
So little cause for carolings Of such ecstatic sound Was written on terrestrial things Afar or nigh around, That I could think there trembled through His happy good-night air Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew And I was unaware.

Ah, JazzO'...those lines do break my heart in two. They are the richness, essential, listening, waking. Thank you, at least from this soul, for the best gift in looking toward the new year.
These, most of all, did pierce me to the core:
The Century's corpse outleant, His crypt the cloudy canopy, The wind his death-lament. The ancient pulse of germ and birth Was shrunken hard and dry, And every spirit upon earth Seemed fevourless as I.
Best regards for a happy, happening, new year, WW

Keiva, what a beautiful song to end this year of tragedy, and begin a new year with. Thank you. And a very Happy New Year, to all my new friends here in AWAD.

Sort of. The a isn't the so-called flat a as in aunt, but the broader a as in aunt.

Hey, the Jewish guy you're talking about was Rabbi Bernstein. Not the same character at all. I think his poem ended with "Oy veh!" (not sure of the spelling, but a great expression ...) Happy new year to all! - DeafAsAPost CK
The idiot also known as Capfka ...
