I've called hors d'oeuvres "horse's eggs".

A common mistake, this. Of course, as "ouevre" means "work," the correct translation is "Cart-horse" or "Plough-horse" depending on whether the context is urban or rural

But if the hors d'ouevre is pulling a hay-cutting machine, is it delivering the "Coup de Grace?"
