...c or when sounded like a as in neighbor or weigh; thus Raleigh, their, heir are not really exceptions, but actually "Exceptions".

Musick: The first is "their"...what's the debate?

And tsuwm: To throw a monkey wrench into the computer is monkey wrench one word or two...forever seeking the Scrabble builders, Raleigh in North Carolina is pronounced: RAH-lee. [raspberry]

Do a search on all forums over the last year and you'll see that thier are a number of examples which may *warrant thier being a permenant alteration of all of thier spellings (Oh, I'm in *trouble now)... not that thier is anything wrong with the *original version.[end disclaimer]

My usual example to disprove the 'I before e' dictum is, "Neither of their weirs were eight feet in height."

tsuwm: I noticed that! It's on the Byrne site, too, and with an accurate definition.

One-horse open sleigh
Eight reindeer...
However, sleight is pronounced differently from the three above, isn't it?

Keiva is a good, local example. A couple of y'all like to apply the general rule and call him Kieva.
