Fairy rings are cause by growth of microscopic fungi in soil. Where the colony starts, it uses up the nutrients, and spreads in a circle, the inside of which has a narrow band of luxurient growth of grass caused by nitrogenous nutrients released by death of fungus in that area. Or so my mycologist friend told me.
So they are seen only on lawns low in nutrients.
