"Fitz" became handed down as part of "ordinary" surnames, and its original meaning fell out of use. Generally in later centuries the bastard child simply took the mother's name. In some (many?) cases, the family was elevated in status by the royal getter of the bastards. Which made him or her, I suppose, a right royal bastard.
