Heard on BBC2 radio while driving to work this morning: "...and traffic on the M69 is nose to tail."

Just about caused an accident on the M6 laughing!

I'm sure it took a dogged effort...

I've seen many a brown-nosed doggie.

Nose-to-tail also conjures up images of Barnum and Bailey's opening parade of hephalumps thrumping around the three rings to the cadence of a circus band.

Nose-to-tail could also be a snake with its tail in its mouth, but that would be a traffic circle of the tightest dimensions...

Are you baiting my poor, sweet Jackie, CapK? I had to read it twice, before I got it and I have a mind that goes there!

In Boston the radio traffic people are more refined, and say "bumper to bumper".

I think the two posts should be counted as one.

And I also think I shouldn't have bothered to write this.

I am not prone to laughing at your being prostrate in traffic, CK!

I'm not sure why, but this reminded me of something that should be in TEd's thread on history, but it fits here too: In the 1936 book, Boners, a schoolboy is quoted as saying, "Medieval cathedrals were supported by flying buttocks."

"Medieval cathedrals were supported by flying buttocks."

And this may have been very true given the reported proclivities of some of the monks ...

Consuelo admitted and I have a mind that goes there!

But clearly not as quickly as mine does ...

When I posted it, I thought most people would at least get the point of it. It was quite clear, though, that the announcer hadn't spotted it. She never even paused or hesitated. Of course, if you're on the M69 you're being sent to (or from) Coventry, so maybe that's got something to do with it.

Incidentally, Mary Whitehouse, the ultimate British gutter policething and the bane of the BBC's existence, died today aged 91. I guess she .knows by now whether she was on the side of the angels or not!

I still like Whitty's comment, "Where's the gutter cops when you need 'em?" (or something like that...)

...instant vision of Jackie in a cop car, speeding toward the radio station.

Oh, very illuminating, I must say. Well done, my son!
